What I Wore This Week: From The Eyes of an 8-year-old
Being a teacher means I get many unfiltered thoughts and opinions on the clothes I wear
Being a teacher and fashion enthusiast comes with its pros and cons. A pro is that you’re given a lot of creative freedom to express your personal style as long as it adheres to your work’s dress code… or actively avoid the principal (the opp). If you don’t, you might get one of these emails.
The con is that children are not afraid to share their opinions on anything, especially the clothes you’re wearing.
Today, I’m going to introduce you to a new kind of fit pic. The ‘hand drawn fit pic.’ Mariano has shared his disdain for the modern-day fit pic previously, so I’m here to shed some light on a fresh way we can showcase our refined taste. I recently had one of my students grow an interest in drawing in what I’m wearing daily.
So the premise of today’s post is I’m going to share some of my fits from the week. Give a brief breakdown head-to-toe, and then share my students’ unfiltered opinions (good or bad).
Also, I don’t know why my student chose to draw the head separate from my body… it’s a little concerning, to say the least.
Also also, don’t think that I’m seeking validation from my students. I only asked purely for the premise of this newsletter SO don’t get it twisted.
Fit 1:
Thrifted oversized Target button-up
For a lot of this year, most of my fits have consisted of darker colours. Partly because it looks good, partly because it helps keep fits simple, and also partly because they’re good colours to wear in the classroom because brother… things can stain…
But anyway, since getting my new Satisfy x Hokas, my strive for vibrance has been reinvigorated! and this mix of colours that had little coordination just worked. Also, I was inspired by one of my fashion homies.
Me: So what are your thoughts on what I’m wearing today?
Student: Ummm.. you’re wearing your booger shoes. The green is nice. Oh, and your top. The blue is nice.
Me: Is there anything you don’t like?
Student: Your pants are funny and they’re really big.
Me: What makes you think they’re too big?
Student: Because when you put your legs together it looks like you’re wearing a skirt!
Ahh fair enough I guess.
Fit 2:
Satisfy Merino Tube Socks (I spent too much money on these I can’t NOT add them to the fit)
Satisfy heavy with the accessories on this day. As spring is in full effect, the weather is a little confusing sometimes — the mornings are freezing, but the afternoons are warm.
I’m a big fan of mixing the professional with the athletic gear, so having a long sleeve button up with the technical shorts is just *chef’s kiss*.
Me: So what do you think of my outfit today?
Student: your pink socks are funny!
Me: A good funny?
Student: Yeah. I like pink!
Me: What else do you think?
Student: You’re wearing your green shoes again.
Me: is that an issue?
Student: No, it’s just you have other shoes don’t you?
…
Student: Your shirt is really big.
Me: Yeah I like the big fit, do you?
Student: it’s ok…
Clearly, this fit wasn’t a winner.
Fit 3:
Oakley Re:Sub Zero Road (not pictured)
Murdered out the fit on this day. The sweatshirt was a gift from Wifey for my birthday, and it’s one of my favourite fitting sweatshirts. It’s a perfect relaxed fit and I wear it pretty much everywhere because it’s so cozy.
“Disney adult cringe bro omg bro you’re so cringe bro. Oh have you seen my new sambas btw?”
Anyways back to the fit. Today was the school’s sports day, which we have every Thursday — so I had the freedom to wear sweatpants. They’re a good wide cut, and I cropped them to a length that works perfectly with the cloudmonsters.
Student: Mr ____ Why are you in all black?
Me: Because I felt like being in all black today.
Student: but your glasses make you look like a cat burglar because they wear dark clothes and a mask.
Me: Do you think I could be a cat burglar?
Student: No, you’re too loud!
Me: Wow thanks.
Student: Also I don’t like your jumper. It’s too hard to draw.
Me: So, you don’t like it because you can’t draw it?
Student: Yeah.
Me: Would you like it more if you didn’t have to draw it?
Student: I don’t know…
Pro tip. Wear clothes that are easy to draw; otherwise, you’re at risk of your students clowning your fit.
Children never fail to keep me on my toes with their blunt yet endearing comments about my fire fits. Their unfiltered honesty, while sometimes surprising, is always appreciated (except if they hate it cause if they do, they’re just stupid kids who don’t know anything).
Can’t believe I missed this one. It would be interesting to see where kids are getting their perception of good / bad. What they like don’t like in terms of fits? Booger shoes?! How dare they!!
was very excited for this one and it did not disappoint!! 🫱🏻🫲🏼
